Study: 83% Of Gamblers Quit Right Before They Would Have Hit The Big One

June 6, 2013

WASHINGTON—According to a study published Monday in the Journal Of Financial Economics, 83 percent of gamblers quit right before hitting the jackpot and striking it rich.

Lead researcher, Dr. Richard Howe of the University of Chicago, confirmed that 83 percent of gamblers recklessly opted to walk away from blackjack tables, slot machines, roulette wheels, and other games of chance, when they were just one big bet away from winning a massive fortune.

“Our research revealed that the vast majority of gamblers who chose not to continue wagering their money on games of chance would have, in fact, hit the big one on the very next try,” said Howe, who analyzed over 5,000 casual to heavy gamblers for the study.

“This was equally true for beginners who quit playing slots after their very first visit to a casino and for high rollers who gave up gambling altogether to avoid financial ruin.”

Lionel Richie's Giant Head: Kickstarter Project Of The Day

So, these dudes on Kickstarter want to make a giant Lionel Richie head for this year's Bestival in the UK. But they need your support to do it--to the tune of about $7,622.
From the potential creators: "We started this ambitious and frankly odd public art project almost a year ago. Inspired by internet pop culture our goal was to make an installation that people could interact and talk with."

"A good looking Lionel Richie Head at a respectable height (3m) will cost us £4,900. This includes the internal turbines to keep his head up, internal sandbags to keep his head down and £1,000 for overnight Bestival security (aka Head Guards)."

"This will be a fully immersive, slightly surreal and very personal experience. As people enter one at a time, they will discover at the core of Lionel’s Head lies a telephone. When a person answers the phone, they hear 'Hello, is it me you’re looking for?'"

Rewards for contributors include Lionel Richie Head t-shirts, face masks, and an overnight stay for two inside Lionel Richie's head.
