America's Worst Cities For Letter Carriers Who Don't Like Getting Bitten By Dogs (Of The Day)

From Time:

"Sadly, “man’s best friend” is often a letter carrier’s worst menace. Despite extensive training on how to avoid aggressive canines — and ample supplies of dog repellant — nearly 6000 postal workers were bitten by dogs in 2012, according to newly-released statistics from the U.S. Postal Service."

The ten worst cities for dog attacks, as determined by the U.S. Postal Service, are listed below, along with the accompanying number of attacks in 2012:

  1. Los Angeles, CA (69)
  2. San Antonio, TX & Seattle, WA (42 each)
  3. Chicago, IL (41)
  4. San Francisco, CA (38)
  5. Philadelphia, PA (34)
  6. Detroit, MI (33)
  7. St. Louis, MO (32)
  8. Baltimore, MD & Sacramento, CA (29)
  9. Houston, TX & Minneapolis, MN (27)
  10. Cleveland and Dayton, OH (26)

  1. The mailman we used to have would skip any house on the route that had a dog out front where it might get to him. I saw him do it more than once. He would start up the sidewalk with someone's mail in his hand, see a dog, and do a quick turn around and head back the other way. I don't know what happened to that person's mail for that day! I can't blame him for not wanting to get attacked. That's an occupational hazard I wouldn't want to have to deal with.

  2. Lola tried to eat the maillady JUST THIS MORNING! I was walking her and she wriggled out of her leash and went in for the kill. Fortunately, the woman had on boots and thick pants, otherwise she'd have chihuahua slobber and tiny little incisor dents in her legs.

  3. Chicago! Yay! Although around here it is usually just a temporary postal worker who doesn't feel like delivering...we've always had problems here with mail being returned for no reason, other than it didn't get delivered. I hate the USPS.

  4. OMG A List of the Day that describes something terrible that is NOT IN FLORIDA. For a change.
