Excellent and sadly funny list!
COME ON EILEEN! The Best of Dexys Midnight Runners
Great list! It's kind of sad for performers that the name of their one hit is more well known than their own name or their band's name. For most of these if you had just listed the names and asked us to name their one hit, I wouldn't have been able to do it. I can't think of any to add at the moment, but I'm sure there are more.
That turning Japanese song freaked me out when I finally found out what it means. Hard to sing along with it now. And if that's the best of Toni Basil, I don't want to hear what's lower down the scale.
I'm not sure if this qualifies, but "The Best of the Waitresses" has "I Know What Boys Like" on the cover. It also has their other songs, most of which I've never heard of. (Although I've always liked "I Could Rule the World if I Only Had the Parts" just because of the title.)I always feel sorry for the "one hit wonders." You know they get SO tired of singing that same damn song!
WW, I think that's an urban myth about "Turning Japanese" being a euphemism for masturbation.
To be fair, Naked Eyes was a TWO HIT wonder - Always Something There to Remind Me is, imho, the more popular song.Quarterflash - didn't think many remembered them! How about "Vanilla Ice Ice Baby"?Or Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky?
Good point, Billy Bob. I had forgotten about "Always Something There To Remind Me."
Well it's in that nasty urban dictionary that I have to look at through my fingers because I'm so easily shockable, I never know what to believe! That Chris DeBurgh song was everywhere on the radio when I lived in the UK. It almost makes me violent to hear it I hate it so much, but more so after I heard an interview where he talked about how he didn't think his wife was so hot, then kind of noticed she was at a party so he wrote the song. He was also later found to be doing the kid's nanny.
I think The Church has a "greatest hit" and other songs collection. They shot their wad with "Under the Milky Way."
Great list but some of these bands had more than just 1 hit, e.g. The Fixx (One Thing Leads to Another, Red Skies, Saved By Zero, Are We Ourselves) and Blue Oyster Cult (Don't Fear the Reaper, Burnin' For You, maybe Godzilla)
BOC should totally not be on there. They had multiple hits and have been around since the early Seventies.
