DVD Of The Day: The Life And Times Of Vivienne Vyle

A little sponsor shillery for a DVD that I might have to buy, because it sounds damn funny.

Copy from VeryShortList.com.

Is it more or less comforting to think that our seemingly more dignified brethren across the pond have daytime talk shows that are just as sleazy and sensationalistic as our own Jerry Springer– or Ricky Lake–like ones?

In the hilarious, dark, dark satirical 2007 BBC series The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle (season one available now on DVD), one ambition-fueled talk-show host works to out-slime them all. Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) plays, with caustic perfection, host Vivienne Vyle, who tends to taunt and goad guests for explosive reactions.

In fact, during the first episode, she incites one distraught man (on the “My Son Calls the Wrong Man Daddy” segment) into fisticuffs, sending her to the hospital—and her ratings sky-high.

Miranda Richardson co-stars as her daffy producer, and the look at the machinations behind the scenes is every bit as entertaining (if not more so) as what happens on the air. The downside? There are only six episodes.

FOLOTD Dirty Found Of The Day (NSFW)

Lookee here what LOTD friend Joe S. found in a drop ceiling while doing some work in his basement last weekend. He only bought the house a year ago, so it appears that someone forgot about their secret stash. Oops.

A closer look at the diagram seen above. Very helpful. I might have to print out a copy and hang it over my bed.

Simpsons List Of The Day: The Films Of Troy McClure

I tried to pick a favorite, but failed. Too many choices.

Pure hilarity from Wikisimpsons and Traci.

Guest List Of The Day: Holiday LPs I Grew Up With

(A list from my pal TheMovieGuru, who waxes nostalgic about the Christmas albums that were foisted on him as a kid. I call it Hopelessly White Christmas.)

Christmas albums that were staples in our family and some that still are...

Barbra Streisand – A Christmas Album

I remember asking my dad when I was a kid, “If Barbra Streisand is Jewish, why does she have a Christmas album?” I can’t remember his answer though. To this day, I still don’t get it. If you want to torture someone, lock them in a room and play Babs' version of “Jingle Bells.”

The Andy Williams Christmas Album

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” Killer song. I never even knew what was on the rest of the album. Still don’t. That song was all that mattered.

A Music Box Christmas

One of my dad’s personal favorites. Yes, you guessed it. It’s simply recordings of music boxes playing Christmas songs. I remember about 10 years ago my dad found out he could order it on CD and was so excited he could hardly contain himself. Yes, they actually printed this album on CD.

Johnny Mathis – Merry Christmas

Our family’s (and my personal) favorite Christmas album. Doesn’t get any better than this. Recorded in 1958 and still popular today. We wore out the original album and had to buy another one. It wasn’t until my teens that I found out Johnny was black. I always thought he was white. (Wait. What? - C.)

Perry Como Sings Merry Christmas Music

He actually reads the entire “'Twas The Night Before Christmas” story which I always loved as a kid. However, when he said that Santa said “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night” at the end which always irked me. Who the hell says “Happy Christmas?”, I thought to myself.. and that was when I was 5 years old.

John Denver and the Muppets – A Christmas Together

My mom and I always used to love to sing “The 12 Days Of Christmas” because you hear each Muppet sing. You’d look forward to the part when Miss Piggy sings way over the top for “Five Gold Rings.” Lots of fun.

Alabama - Christmas

Another one of my dad’s favorites and one of the albums that makes me want to vomit as soon as I hear it. To this day, whenever I’m at my parents’ house I make a point of trying to hide this cd so my dad can’t find it. Torture song – “Christmas In Dixie.” (There's a worse one. I'm gonna post it later. - C)

Robert Goulet’s Wonderful World Of Christmas

Goulet was the man. His version of “Do You Hear What I Hear?” is still the best. I always thought he was a badass, even when I was too young to know what a badass was. (I don't think I've ever put "Robert Goulet" and "badass" in the same sentence, but hey, it's your list, T. - C)

The Carpenters – Christmas Portrait

Yes, when I was little I loved “Merry Christmas Darling.” I was too young to know I could get beat up for saying that.

Burl Ives – Have A Holly Jolly Christmas

Best part of this album is, it’s funny. His rendition of “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” is hysterical. He puts an “a” before everything he sings. “He’s a making a list, he’s a checking it twice…. Santa Claus is a comin'… to town.”

Holiday Classic Of The Day: The Hanukkah Song

You gotta watch this at least once a year. No, really, you do. Watch it. I'm not kidding. You better fucking watch it.

Christmas Song WIN Of The Day (video)

Why the hell doesn't this guy have a recording contract? People would line up to buy his record.
